Halifax: Children receiving more pocket money

Halifax has conducted research revealing that children today receive more pocket money that they did 21 years ago, as the bank looks back on 21 years of providing child savings accounts.

The bank claimed that the amount of pocket money received by children has risen by 419 per cent since 1987, which is nearly four times the rate of inflation over the same period.

In 1987 children received an average of £1.18 per week, compared with the average of £6.13 a week that they were given last year.

Halifax said that the upwards curve has not always been smooth, with the total amount received falling in 1994, 1996, 1997, 2006, 2007 and 2008. However, last year children in the UK received a total of £1.7 billion.

Recently, research by NatWest revealed that the credit crunch is causing increasing numbers of parents to give children more responsibility for their own finances so they can learn to budget properly.
