Red Nose Day 'may suffer from reduced generosity'

The economic downturn may make it harder for Comic Relief to raise as much money as usual this year, as the economic downturn has led many Brits to cut back on the amount they donate to charity.

According to a poll conducted by Fairinvestment.co.uk, 22 per cent of people in the UK have made cutbacks in the amount they give in charitable donations and increasing numbers are cancelling direct debits to charities.

Rachael Stiles, a spokesperson for the website, said that it is "understandable" that the current economic climate is causing people to cut back on the amounts they give.

She added: "At least with Red Nose Day there are a number of products people can buy, which consequently donate money to charity."

A motley crew of celebrities has been gathered to support this year's comic relief drive, including X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole and BBC Radio One DJ Fearne Cotton who recently climbed Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise money.
