New guide offers pointers on overseas card use

A new guide on getting the most out of using your credit cards abroad has been published jointly by the UK Cards Association and the British Association of Travel Agents (Abta).

'Using your card overseas' features details of the types of charges Brits may face when using their cards on foreign shores, whether that be through a cash machine or in a store and also what precautions they can take before they leave to ensure their bills do not make their eyes water upon their return.

Sandra Quinn, director of communications for Apacs, the UK's card association, said that the guide provides "useful advice when it comes to using your card abroad, and can help ensure that you're not caught out by any surprising charges and that your trip overseas is free from fraud".

According to statistics from the Apacs, there were 317 million transactions performed overseas involving UK cards in 2008, which equates to three per cent of all British transactions during this timeframe.
