Good-quality advice 'key to dealing with repossessions'

Good-quality advice is essential if people are worried that their house may be repossessed, according to industry insider.

Chris Jenkins, co-owner of the Homeowners Advice Centre, claimed that the government has put adequate systems in place to help people in this situation.

He highlighted the government's new website as a positive step in making sure people are aware of what they can do, but any advice had to be in an accessible format if the message was going to get through.

"Along with the government's own initiatives, local councils, debt charities and mortgage lenders themselves are able to offer advice," he said.

The most important thing, according to Mr Jenkins, is for people not to hide away and stick their head in the sand if they are worried that they may have their house repossessed.

The government advice website, which has videos and articles about every stage of the repossession process, was announced by the Ministry of Justice on August 31st.
