Santander cuts cost of reward accounts

Reward account costs in Abbey and Alliance & Leicester (A&L) have been reduced to half price until December 13th, the brand's owner Santander has announced.

The packaged accounts, which offer a variety of benefits and a "market-leading" six per cent AER, have had their prices slashed to £5 a month for three months.

Santander previously introduced a new fixed-rate bond through its three banks - Abbey, A&L and Bradford & Bingley - with 4 per cent gross/AER

Abbey's Reward Bank Account provides clients with car and family travel insurance, plus discounts on days out and hotel accommodation.

Customers with A&L Premier 50 Current Account receive private healthcare benefits and multi-trip travel insurance.

Both give accountholders assistance if their card is lost or stolen and identity protection with up to £50,000 worth of insurance.

Emma Walkley, current account manager for the two institutions, said the accounts are ideal for people looking for good returns on their money as Christmas approaches, plus there is the added protection of an interest-free overdraft from both firms.
