Homephonechoices.co.uk has offered consumers advice on how to make cheaper phone calls during her festive period.

With 25 per cent of Brits planning on making a phone call to a loved one who lives abroad this Christmas, according to research by the website, finding cheaper calling options can be a good idea.

Making phone calls over the internet is often cheaper, if not free. Software like Skype allows users to speak to other people with the software without having to spend a penny.

If calls abroad are made often from a landline, getting an add-on package to the regular phone bill can make phone calls cheaper, as a lower rate is charged, in addition to a monthly fee.

Michael Phillips, product director for the website, said: "Everyone needs to be smarter with their money these days, so I would urge anyone with relatives and friends living abroad to seriously consider international calling plans, add-ons or VoIP."

For those thinking of getting a dongle this Christmas for wireless broadband, the consumer group advises checking the coverage in the area before purchasing a specific product.
