Fiona Lambert, brand director at George, said the recession has influenced shoppers to repair and re-stitch their old clothes rather than buy something new, but because many mums do not have the time for this, the full refund seemed a sensible idea.

She added: "The George 100-day quality guarantee now means that our customers should be just as happy with a George garment after washing and wearing as the day they bought it."

George has invested £40 million in the last 18 months to improve the quality of its clothes and of the £900 million shoppers spent on school wear only £900 has been refunded.

However, Michael Shambrook of Consumer Direct suggested recently that some people are reluctant to return goods to retailers because they are unsure what their rights are.
