Clive Bolton, 'at retirement' director at the financial services provider, pointed out that many people currently approaching retirement have had a variety of employers in their lifetime, which was not always the case in the past.
As a result, he claimed people should combine their pension pots to get the best income when they finish working, since individuals can be quoted poorer annuity rates if they have several smaller schemes rather than one larger sum.
"The modern day job market is much more fluid and this is having a direct impact on the pension landscape," Mr Bolton stated.
In his opinion, it is more important than ever to make the best use of the funds a person has saved up.
This month, head of pensions at Aviva Paul Goodwin lauded the launch of a salary exchange calculator, which he suggested could help advisers show the benefits of such products to their clients.
