Sainsbury's Bank sees last minute Christmas bill top £7.6bn

The bill for last minute Christmas shopping is expected to come in at £7.6 billion this year.

Furthermore around £1.65 billion of this will be spent on credit cards.

A study by Sainsbury's Bank revealed that 424,000 people plan to spend more than £1,000 on last-minute festive gifts alone.

For 1.6 million people Christmas this year will cost somewhere between £500 and £1,000.

Sainsbury's Bank's credit card manager, Lucy Hunter said credit card shopping was not something to be feared over the festive period.

"If you are unsure whether you will be able to clear your card balance in January, using a credit card that offers an introductory rate of zero per cent APR on purchases could be a great way to spread the cost," she said.

According to Sainsbury's Bank ten per cent of people, some 3.87 million people intend to put all their shopping on their credit cards.

It is believed only half the people planning to use cards expect to clear the expenditure from them by the end of January.
