Alliance & Leicester savings account combination offer

A new Alliance & Leicester savings account and portfolio bond offer could strike a good balance between returns and security, it has been suggested.

The offer, entitled the Balanced Savings & Investment plan, consists of a one-year fixed-rate Alliance & Leicester savings account and a Legal & General portfolio bond.

Ewan Edwards, head of savings and investments at Alliance & Leicester, said the offer is ideal for people who want the benefit of money that is working hard for them, but "who are looking to make their money work harder, but still like the security of keeping some of their money in cash".

The Alliance & Leicester savings account has a gross annual interest rate of eight per cent (5.15 per cent AER), while the Legal & General bond offers "long-term growth potential".

Mr Edwards added: "This plan balances the need for a safe haven for short-term savings, whilst giving the opportunity to invest over the longer term for potentially higher returns than from a typical deposit account."

The minimum deposit for the Alliance & Leicester savings account is £1,000, while at least £5,000 is recommended for investment into the Legal & General Portfolio Bond over a period of five years.

Earlier this month, finance guide Moneyfacts nominated Alliance & Leicester in four categories of its yearly Business Moneyfacts awards, which are to be held next month.

Alliance & Leicester was named a finalist in the categories for best overall business bank, best business current account provider, best computer banking provider and best no-notice business deposit account provider.
