Alliance & Leicester savings account launched

The deal is only open to customers choosing to invest in the Balanced Savings & Investment Plan, which comprises a one-year fixed-rate savings account from
Alliance & Leicester and a portfolio bond from Legal & General.
Customers signing up to the account must have a minimum deposit of £1,000 for the savings account and a minimum investment of £5,000 for the bond.
Withdrawal restrictions apply on the savings account, while Legal & General recommends that customers invest in the portfolio bond for at least five years.
Matt Hall, head of savings and investments at Alliance & Leicester, said: "This plan balances the need for a safe haven for short term savings, while providing the opportunity to invest over the longer term for potentially higher returns than from a typical savings account."
Yesterday Alliance & Leicester International announced two new additions to its online savings portfolio - the eSaver Offshore (issue 2) and eSaver Offshore Notice 50.
