Santander: Brits save billions avoiding package holidays

The research by Santander Cards estimates that collectively holidaymakers saved £4.92 billion last year alone.
The savings were a result of avoiding travel agents, tour operators and package holidays.
Of the 25 million British holidaymakers who travelled, 47 per cent are estimated to have taken this DIY approach, with almost half of those using online booking to save money.
Emma Roberts the director of Santander Cards, believes it is hardly a surprise that people are approaching holidays in this way, given the financial climate.
She said: "It's not surprising that in the current economic climate, holidaymakers are increasingly looking for value and are prepared to do the homework themselves in order to get the best deal."
Research from Santander earlier this month revealed that the economic climate had perhaps had an impact on Britons' generosity levels.
Compared to a 2008 survey, 13 per cent more people said they would keep £100 if they found it on the street.
