Savings account provider Co-operative highlights ethical success

A new report released by Co-operative Financial Services has demonstrated the growing popularity of ethical spending, with a representative from the firm suggesting this trend may surprise some commentators.

Chief operating officer at the company Tim Franklin pointed out that many analysts assumed such concerns would fall by the wayside once the economic downturn kicked in.

But the Co-operative's Ethical Consumerism Report indicates spending on green goods and services has risen 18 per cent over the past two years.

"This annual report clearly shows that the growth in ethical consumerism continues to outstrip the market as a whole," said Mr Franklin.

He went on to say that "ambitious legislation" may be needed in the UK if some of the government's renewable energy targets are to be met.

Last week, the Co-operative unveiled research regarding the biggest changes of 2010, with the public voting the introduction of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition as the most important switch of the year.
