Insurance provider More Than has urged pet buyers to research their animal's history and take out appropriate cover after the BBC documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed.

The programme, shown last night, uncovered the genetic ailments suffered by the deliberate inbreeding and genetic manipulation of pedigree dogs.

These include breathing trouble, skulls that are too small for their brains and other painful problems.

Mel Everest of More Than said pet owners needed to research their animal and learn about hereditary problems for various breeds.

In other insurance news, Legal & General advised Britons to check their cover for holiday luggage even if they are not going abroad.

According to its research, holiday belongings for a family of four could be worth over £3,000.

Legal & General said holidaymakers should ensure they have adequate cover even if they are staying in Britain.

Personal baggage for a holiday can be included in a travel policy or the personal possessions cover of a home insurance policy.
