Christmas is 'gruel-tide' for some, says Tesco

The season of goodwill may not be quite that for some Britons as the amount of people currently stressing about Christmas is around one in five, Tesco Personal Finance has said.

A study conducted by the company discovered that 22 per cent of people in the UK are troubled by thoughts of presents, entertaining family and friends and partying and their effect on the Christmas cash flow.

The research is Tesco Personal Finance's second Mood of the Nation study and 42 per cent declared that they would be spending more money specifically over the Christmas period than they have done since August.

John Trotter, head of customer insight at Tesco Personal Finance, said: "It could be that as we move into autumn, the prospect of the colder winter weather and family tensions erupting over the Christmas period are contributing to the dip.

"While many people look forward to the end of the year, for others the festive season can be a source of stress."

Survey figures also showed that the rising cost of heating bills was causing concern, with 39 per cent of recipients citing this as a worry.

Tesco Personal Finance is a collaboration of the UK's largest supermarket and the Royal Bank of Scotland and was created in 1997.
