UK insurance 'has become more complex'

The UK insurance industry has become more complex over recent years as a result of the way legal firms operate, it has been claimed.

A spokeswoman for the Institute of Advanced Motorists said the issue of referral fees is one such example of people having to deal with the complexities of the sector, with the need for greater clarity in the future to ensure Brits are getting the best deals available to them.

She argued: "We believe there is a need to ensure that costs driven by such activities should be restrained. The costs are being paid for in insurance premiums."

The news follows comments by John Portwood, personal lines insurance broker at Portwood & Co, who recently claimed that the dual factors of high inflation and low pay increases have meant that fraudulent insurance activity has risen in recent months, as some unscrupulous people look to make a fast buck from their insurers.
