Location 'can impact home insurance costs for Brits'

Individuals planning to take out home insurance cover have been advised that the location of their property could have an impact on the cost of their premium.

Malcolm Tarling, a spokesman for the Association of British Insurers, said in terms of major factors that can affect premiums, living in an area that has a high crime rate or near to a river which is known to have a risk of flooding are the major concerns for insurers.

He commented: "They are the two areas where the place you live can have a direct impact on the costs of your cover."

Furthermore, Mr Tarling noted homeowners can see their policy costs affected by other factors, including the number of high-value items in the home, such as jewellery or heirlooms.

According to Tom Stringer, head of AA Home Emergency Response, many UK properties are falling into a state of disrepair at present, as many Brits look to cut back on their insurance costs by not making claims and instead doing DIY fixes to their homes.
