Rodents and pests 'causing havoc for homeowners'

Up to one-fifth of UK homeowners have been forced to make home insurance claims as a result of damage to their property from rodents or other pests in the last year, it has been revealed.

According to data compiled by insurer LV=, 21 per cent of UK homes have been damaged by these creatures, with 65 per cent of UK pest controllers saying there has been a surge in the rat and vermin population over the last 12 months.

John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= home insurance, said: "The dangers of ignoring a pest problem can be devastating and those who find unwanted guests in their home should call in the experts before it is too late."

The news follows comments by Malcolm Tarling, a spokesman for the Association of British Insurers, who argued UK homeowners must be aware of the terms of their home insurance policy in order to have peace of mind that they will be covered against all types of damage to their home.
