Brits 'should be aware of home cover details'

Individuals who have taken out a home insurance policy to cover their belongings have been urged to ensure they understand the details of the deal, what items are covered and in what circumstances, it has been argued.

Malcolm Tarling, a spokesman for the Association of British Insurers, said policies can have a range of stipulations regarding values, whether items are covered outside the home and the types of damage that are covered, so it is therefore extremely important homeowners are au fait with these issues when considering if a new deal is right for them.

He commented: "If you have got expensive items, make sure they are listed separately and your insurer may charge you an extra premium to cover them."

Mr Tarling also recently noted that the issue of location can have an impact on insurance premium costs for UK homeowners, as living in a high-crime or flood-prone area can result in significantly higher costs for cover.
