Brits advised on reducing home insurance cost

Property owners across the UK have been advised of numerous methods they could employ to bring down the cost of their home insurance cover.

John Portwood, personal lines insurance broker at Portwood & Co, said valid suggestions for reducing expense include increasing the excess on the policy or improving the security of the home.

Strong locks or an alarm with central monitoring can be extremely positive measures for homeowners, with insurers taking these factors into account when setting annual premiums.

He commented: "Also make sure that they are not over-insured - obtain an accurate estimate for rebuilding the home and replacing the contents as new."

According to figures compiled by Sainsbury's Home Insurance, 27 per cent of people with home insurance have been with the same provider for between three and six years and 12 per cent - 4.65 million people - have been with the same provider for seven years or more.
