UK homes are 'falling into disrepair'

Many properties across the UK are falling into a state of disrepair as Brits look to avoid making claims on their home insurance and instead carry out DIY projects around their home when things break, it has been revealed.

According to data compiled by the AA, 39 per cent of Brits have delayed home repairs or tried to fix things themselves in order to save money over the last 12 months, with Brits now facing a collective bill of £1.2 billion as a result of DIY problems or unforeseen costs.

Tom Stringer, head of AA Home Emergency Response, said: "As the struggling economy continues to hit people in the pocket, more and more people are putting off home maintenance and are letting their homes get into a state of disrepair."

Earlier this month, John Portwood, personal lines insurance broker at Portwood & Co, noted individuals could make savings on their home insurance by investing in strong locks or an alarm with central monitoring in order to improve their security, which will have positive results with many insurers.
