Abbey and Alliance & Leicester: ISA changes will encourage saving

A spokesman for Abbey, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford and Bingley has claimed that the government's changes to the regulations governing individual savings accounts (ISAs) may encourage more people to save.

Reza Attar-Zadeh said: "[The] announcement makes the case for ISAs even more compelling. Now, hopefully this change will go some way to inspire people to get back into the savings habit."

The banks' parent company Santander recently conducted a survey which revealed that 43 per cent of UK savers do not have an ISA at the moment.

Furthermore, just 22 per cent of these people are planning to open one in the next year and 28 per cent remain undecided.

The decision by the government, announced by chancellor Alistair Darling yesterday, raises the threshold for tax-free savings that can be invested in an ISA from £7,200 to £10,200.
