Lloyds TSB Insurance warns over lost property

British holidaymakers preparing to return home from their summer breaks have been urged to take care when packing their bags.

Figures from Lloyds TSB Insurance show that more than £2 billion worth of personal belongings are left behind in tourist destinations.

More than half of those questioned revealed that items such as toiletries, clothes, sunglasses, shoes and jewellery had been forgotten when boarding their inbound flight.

However, some 15 per cent of those surveyed said that they had no insurance on their personal belongings.

Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance said: "The post holiday blues are hard enough to handle, without the added stress of lost property.

“Leaving behind the odd toothbrush is not so much of a problem, but forgetting more valuable items can cause real headaches."

Respondents cited poor planning as the reason for belongings being left behind with 14 per cent leaving packing until the last minute.

"A simple checklist of everything you've brought on holiday can help make packing much less of a struggle," added Mr Loney.

Less than a fifth of those polled had made any attempt to retrieve lost items, heightening the need for travel insurance to be considered.
