Some skiers stopping short of securing safety on slopes

The risks associated with skiing are being compounded by the fact that some people are not insuring themselves when they head off to the slopes, says Moneysupermarket.

Research undertaken by the price comparison website found that every fourth skier or snowboarder takes to the snow while uninsured thus putting themselves and others at risk of having to fork out large sums in the event of an injury.

Due to a further 22 per cent of respondents stating that they could not remember if they were insured or not, only half of people could actually be sure that they were properly covered on the piste.

Peter Gerrard, researcher at Moneysupermarket, said: "While some people may not realise they need extra cover for winter sports, it seems that many are prepared to take a huge financial risk, both to themselves and potentially to other skiers."

And in light of the fact that 18 per cent of people who go on ski holidays do not actually ski, the prospect of over-indulging on the old gluhwein has led Mr Gerrard to warn of the perils of getting drunk on the slopes.

"It is a little known fact that virtually every travel insurance policy on the market includes a clause that says if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time an incident occurred, you may not be able to make a claim as your policy may be rendered invalid," he said.
