Home insurance is "very important" during renovation

The importance of having adequate home insurance increases during times of renovation, one expert has claimed.

A recent survey by Communities and Local Government revealed that 27.1 per cent of privately-owned homes are 'non-decent' for human habitation, highlighting the need for renovation at many homes.

Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, said that people who are looking to upgrade their property need to ensure they have adequate protection.

"If you are undertaking substantial work and you need to move out then you need to [obtain] specialist renovation insurance - that's very similar to the insurance people take out when they're building their house," he said.

Mr Orme added that specialist small-level insurance should be sought for smaller renovations such as a loft conversion or small extension.

Homebuilding & Renovating is the best-selling self builders' publication in the UK, providing its readers with news, updates on regulations, facts and competitions.
