Direct Line Insurance launches Identity Fraud Assistance

After the Home Office recently revealed that identity fraud is the UK's fastest-growing crime, Direct Line Insurance has decided to add Identity Fraud Assistance to its home insurance policy.

The service comes at no extra charge to policy holders and will be available to all new and existing customers who have a combined buildings and contents insurance policy with the company.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance for Direct Line, said that the number of cases of identity fraud has "increased significantly over the last eight years."

He warned that victims "could encounter debt collectors, court actions and difficulties getting a mortgage, credit card or bank account if their credit report is not corrected".

Research from Cifas, the UK's fraud prevention service, found that 136,966 incidents of identity fraud were reported in the period of January to September 2007, up almost ten per cent up on the same period in 2006.

It also found that the three stolen items most commonly used in cases of identity fraud were non-UK passports, utility bills and UK passports.
