Military personnel "need specialist providers" for insurance

Those serving in the armed forces have higher premiums and should seek out specialist providers for insurance, an investment expert has said.

Richard Eling, investment director at Buckles Investment Services, said that mainstream providers fail to offer cover at a competitive price.

He said: "Generally, people who are going to be in dangerous situations have to go to specialist providers and there are specialist providers out there."

Mr Eling advised reading the small print to ensure specific roles such as navy divers or bomb disposal officers were covered, even within a specialist policy.

According to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, 4099 US soldiers have died since the war began in 2003, compared with 176 British, and 29,978 US soldiers have been wounded.

Meanwhile, a study for the Medical Research Council, reported in the Observer, found that more than 30 soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq were left off official lists of war dead, while some families waited hundreds of days – or over 1,000 – for inquest verdicts into deaths of their relatives.
