Younger drivers 'would consider going green'

More young drivers in the UK are inclined to purchase environmentally-friendly cars, it has been found.

According to esure, electric, hybrid and bio-fuel vehicles are more likely to be bought by under-25s, of which some 81 per cent said they would contemplate driving such a car.

A poll by the organisation revealed that the credit crunch has affected many people's attitude towards driving, with one in five stating that they would consider changing their car to a more fuel efficient model - something that could be of benefit to car insurance customers.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insurance, said: "With the growing cost of motoring and the pressure of having a greener lifestyle, many motorists are considering alternatives and the electric car is an attractive option.

"It is very cheap to run and you'll never be stung at the petrol pump again."

Young men are said to drive badly because of an attitude known as 'caveman in the car', according to esure.
