ABTA: Drinking invalidates most accident insurance claims

Most insurance policies will not cover a person if alcohol was the cause of an accident, the Association of British Travel Agents has said.

Spokesperson Frances Tuke said that people need to be aware of the terms and conditions of their insurance policies.

She said that in recent years, there have been some "crackdowns" about drinking abroad.

"Certain destinations have taken a more zero tolerance approach to binge drinking," she said.

A poll by travel website Expedia found hoteliers voted the British to be the worst behaved of all nationalities and the third most impolite.

Heavy drinking and bad behaviour by British tourists has prompted diplomats and officials in the Greek island of Zante to meet to discuss the issue.

According to the third annual British Behaviour Abroad report by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 2,032 Britons were arrested in Spain last year, while 695 were hospitalised and 6,710 passports were lost.
