The cost of car insurance can go up significantly for primary drivers who wish to add an au pair or child minder to their policy.

This is what has been discovered by Confused.com, which revealed that the addition could quadruple the cost of cover with some insurance providers.

More Than offered the best deal, according to the website's statistics table, with an au pair only increasing the cost of a policy by £190.52.

In comparison, the price difference at Yes was over seven times that amount at £1,342.47.

"It is very important to shop around for the best deal rather than accepting the first price your insurance provider gives you," commented Simon Lamble, Confused.com's product director.

He called many packages on the market "extortionate" and suggested it would best to include an au pair on a policy right from the start, as making changes later on can be much more expensive.

The report follows advice from Moneyexpert that shopping around is the best strategy for those seeking the cheapest car loans.
