Which?: Consumers do not trust comparison sites

Just three in ten people believe that financial comparison sites provide consumers with the best deals, according to research carried out by Which?.

More than 50 per cent said they will go and buy their insurance straight from the provider after using the online comparison tool.

In addition, two-thirds believe that the deal offered as the best for the customer is actually the one that earns the site the most commission.

James Daley, editor of Which? Money, suggested shopping around between sites for the best deal, or going straight to the provider as not all are listed on the sites.

"Watch out for things like voluntary excess and make sure the policy you're offered is what you actually want," he warned.

Comparison site moneysupermarket.com responded to the findings by stating that in its own research, 83 per cent of its customers were satisfied with the service they had received.

It added that it incorporates new companies regularly to its searches, with 108 presently being searched for quotes on car insurance.
