Defaqto finds 77% of travel insurance does not cover airline failure

Consumers are being encouraged to double check their travel insurance before jetting off on their summer holidays after Defaqto discovered that 77 per cent do not cover airline failure.

In light of the recent issue of grounded flights due to volcanic ash, many people found they were not covered for all they expected to be.

Independent travellers are most at risk and should review their travel insurance policy to make sure it covers them for failure from a scheduled airline as many do not.

Head of research at Defaqto Brian Brown said: "While many give cover of £1,500 or more for scheduled airline failure the limit may not be sufficient to cover all of the other pre-booked and paid for items."

Mr Brown highlighted that many policies do not necessarily allow sufficient cover for hotel accommodation, pre-paid trips and other additional holiday expenses that are paid for ahead of arrival at the holiday destination.

In the same report Mr Brown discovered that 28 per cent of family travel insurance policies did not cover children who did not live permanently with the family member they were travelling with.
