Moneysupermarket.com urges globetrotters to check home insurance

Consumers who are likely to spend more than 30 days away from home have been advised to check the terms of their home insurance.

According to moneysupermarket.com, not all cover policies provide protection in the event of a property being unoccupied for a whole month.

As a result, it has recommended that if anyone is going on a prolonged stay away from home, they check if their insurance is suitable for their needs.

Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said some cover providers are very strict about how long a property can be left unoccupied for.

"It is therefore vital you inform your insurer if you plan to be away for longer than the stated length of time," she commented.

Ms Owens said failure to do this could invalidate an insurance policy and leave homeowners open to hefty bills in the event of a house being damaged or burgled.

According to the Association of British Insurers, cover providers dealt with 78,000 domestic burglary claims last summer.
