Robin Reames, claims director at the insurance provider, explained that drivers will often find it hard to concentrate when someone in the car has consumed too much alcohol.
He said: "We're familiar with drink-driving and the dangers it causes at this time of year, but there is a new danger on the road - the drunk passenger."
Research by swiftcover.com showed that 76 per cent of motorists have had to ferry home a friend in their car while their companion was drunk.
Mr Reames suggested there is less danger involved in such journeys if the driver can convince their inebriated acquaintance to sit in the back of the car.
Last month, swiftcover.com received an accolade at the Drum Awards for employing the best digital media strategy of the year, thanks to its Summer's Hottest Playlist project.
