BIBA lauds system for checking insurance for young drivers

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has said it is pleased at the Continuous Insurance Enforcement regulations which have been set in parliament.

Under the new rules, it will be an offence to be in possession of an uninsured vehicle.

Previously, it was only those who drove without car insurance that could be prosecuted.

To avoid legal action, car drivers need to submit a Statutory Off Road Notice or purchase the right car insurance.

If they fail to do so, they may be given a fixed fine of £100 or prosecuted with a penalty of as much as £1,000.

Graeme Trudgill, head of corporate affairs at BIBA, said: "A new system will be launched this spring that compares records on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) with those held on the DVLA Vehicle Database to identify keepers of uninsured vehicles."

BIBA recently announced it is to urge the government to put in place a plan to help lower the "spiralling cost" of car insurance.
