Saga Pet Insurance advises on cold

With cold weather and more snowfall forecast for this winter, Saga Pet Insurance has advised owners to put some extra effort into protecting their furry friends from the chill.

Even the thickest fur can't protect against all of winter's woes, the insurer said. Water can get trapped in dog's paws and freeze, causing painful ice balls to form.

Chemicals on the roads can also dry the paws and cause cracks, while cats and dogs licking street salt off their fur can get stomach upsets.

Andrew Goodsell, chief executive at Saga, said: "It is apparently going to be a bitterly cold winter this year and although we remember to wrap up warm ourselves, we sometimes forget about our pets.

"The freezing temperatures and poor conditions can make our pets very vulnerable during the winter and we should do all we can to keep them as comfortable as possible."

Saga Pet Insurance offers cover for life policies that start at a monthly £2.67 premium for a cat and £8.11 for a dog.
