Halifax Home Insurance warning over electrical safety

Halifax Home Insurance is warning homeowners of the importance of electrical safety after figures show that 2,500 Brits are killed or injured every year as a result of electrical fires.

Halifax Home Insurance says that one fifth of household fire insurance claims are caused by electrical equipment failures, and it is urging both buyers and sellers to take more care when trading electrical goods.

And Halifax Home Insurance is warning that second-hand electrical items present a particular danger, since tests show that one-in-four second-hand electrical goods fail a standard safety check.

Responding to the report's findings, Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance, commented: "We're concerned that the nation's renewed appetite of making money out of old items could lead to a slide in electrical safety standards.

"We are calling on anyone buying or selling second-hand electrical items to ensure that the goods meet the required safety standards. Failure to do so could not only leave the sellers open to prosecution but cause damage to the users' home and put lives as risk."
