Halifax Travel Insurance recommends hybrid cars

Halifax Travel Insurance has proclaimed the benefits of hybrid cars for road trip holidays.

The provider revealed that more than 17.5 million Brits took to the road for their holidays over the past year, covering an average of 861 miles in their vehicles.

However, only one per cent of those intending to embark on a road trip this year intend to hire an environmentally-friendly hybrid car - despite the insurer's claim that such engines can cut fuel costs by 53 per cent.

"Britons can reduce the ecological impact caused by these road trips by switching to hybrid-powered cars, which will not only benefit the environment but the money you could save on fuel is enough to pay for your annual travel insurance," said Paul Birkhead, senior manager of pricing and underwriting for Halifax Travel Insurance.

A recent poll of holidaymakers by Zurich found that 24 per cent are willing to drive distances of more than 750 miles to go on holiday.
