Saga Insurance: Area 'important' when it comes to vet bills

Pet owners in the south-east can expect to pay the highest vet bills of anywhere in the UK, according to new research from Saga.

Saga Pet Insurance found that the average vet bill in the south-east is 30 per cent more expensive than in the cheapest region, Wales.

It also revealed that the average UK vet charge is £309.28, but warned that costs can spiral to as much as £10,000 for ongoing conditions, or £4,000 for a broken bone.

With such high bills, the insurer warned that the location of a pet-owner's home "could dramatically affect the amount you pay".

Anthony Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, said: "Without appropriate pet insurance in place, owners could be faced with the nightmare prospect of having to withhold care because it's simply too expensive."

Direct Line Insurance recently found that 11 per cent of people are not up-to-date with their cat or dogs vaccinations, despite the fact that they can prevent many common illnesses.
