The product is targeting people aged between 50 and 79, who are increasingly travelling both more often and further afield, Alliance & Leicester said.
Research by the company predicts that 11 million people over the age of 50 currently intend to travel more during the next five to ten years.
"If you are dedicating a particular service or product to this age group then going beyond 60 or 65 makes sense, and it is something that the older generation will make great use of," Alliance & Leicester spokesperson Steve Gracey commented.
The travel insurer developed its premier 50 current account after the group recognised that the cost of travelling is becoming higher, the older people get, he said.
Recent research by Age Concern found that 92 per cent of travel insurance policies contain age restrictions that limit cover for older people.
