Churchill Home Insurance covers DIY disasters

The insurer outlines DIY disasters as accidents such as falling off a ladder and breaking furniture or spilling paint over the carpet.

Martin Scott, head of the division, said: "Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home."

Research undertaken by the insurance company showed that the average amount of money spent by women to repair DIY accidents was £146, while men required on average £90.

However, Aviva recently reported that leaks in bathrooms and toilets were the problems which cost most to repair, needing an average of £2,000 as a result of the poor maintenance work.

According to the insurer, this was mainly because the standard house contained half a tonne of water and therefore a burst pipe would easily saturate any property.
