Churchill Home Insurance: £295m worth of goods stolen from gardens

Up to £295 million worth of goods have been stolen from Britons' gardens, Churchill Home Insurance has claimed today.

The company reports that around 75 per cent of British people take pride in their garden and that they can contain possessions worth an average of £738.

Such items as gardening tools, plants, garden decorations, furniture and barbecues step up the value of the contents of many gardens and are among the objects stolen by criminals.

Almost a quarter of households have had the things kept in their garden or shed stolen, Churchill Home Insurance states, with the taken items sometimes including bikes, DIY equipment and even clothes from washing lines.

"It is clear that garden security is not always at the forefront of many householder's minds," said Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance.

"Nevertheless, thefts from the garden and outbuildings are very prevalent at this time of year. It is in householders' interests to take reasonable precautions."

Churchill Home Insurance provides up to £250 of cover for any unfixed garden items such as gnomes and furniture that are stolen, plants in pots and clothes on the washing line, as well as £2,000 of insurance for bicycles if they are taken from a locked garage or outbuilding.
