Millions of holidays cancelled in recent years, says Sainsbury's Bank Travel Insurance

Around 4.14 million people have called off their planned foreign holidays since 2003, according to new research released today by Sainsbury's Bank Travel Insurance.

A lack of travel insurance among 13 per cent of people could mean that thousands of people have lost out on money spent booking a holiday they did not actually go on.

The research also revealed that over 100,000 travel insurance claims will be made this year in relation to holiday plans going wrong and people not being able to make the trip they had already paid for.

Robert O'May, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank, said: "People make significant investments in their holidays, but can often overlook the fact that things can go wrong while they are away or that they may have to cancel them."

Sainbury's Bank offers single-trip, extended-trip and annual travel insurance policies.
