More Than DriveTime 'increases road safety'

The risk of young drivers being involved in a car accident doubles during the night, according to insurance company More Than.

It was revealed that those aged between 18 and 25 run a 40 per cent risk of being in a traffic accident between 23:00 and 06:00 GMT, compared to a 20 per cent chance at other times.

More Than claims that this risk could be significantly lowered if young drivers reduce the time they spent driving at night.

In a bid to lure get young people to refrain from night-time driving, the insurance firm has launched the More Than DriveTime initiative.

With this scheme, car insurance for young drivers who stay off the roads during the most dangerous period for driving works out much cheaper.

The chief executive of road safety charity Brake, Mary Williams, described More Than DriveTime as an "excellent first step towards reducing the exposure of young drivers to driving at particularly risky times of day".

Her comments come during the annual Road Safety Week, which kicked off this year.

The focus of the awareness week for 2006 is the safety of young drivers and passengers.

Brake, which is responsible for organising the week, says that nine people are killed on British roads every day.
