Skiers 'risk safety' on slopes when drunk

Skiers are heading onto the slopes with a dangerous amount of alcohol in their blood from over-indulging the previous evening, according to More Than.

The insurance provider estimates that during a week's break, 568,000 skiers will hit the piste with seven units of alcohol in their bloodstream, which is more than double the UK's drink drive limit.

This will not fall to a safe level again until 11am, by which point many winter sports fans will have been out for several hours.

However, skiing while drunk can have serious implications, as insurers may refuse to pay out after an accident if the individual involved is found to have consumed alcohol, although 31 per cent of those questioned were not aware of this fact.

Pete Markey, a spokesperson for More Than, said: "Brits abroad have a reputation for drinking to excess, but throw a high-speed downhill sport into the mix and you have a very nasty combination."

Earlier this month, More Than advised those heading off on ski and snowboarding holidays to ensure their policies covered all of the activities they were intending to participate in.
