ABI calls for "financial health" awareness campaign

The government should run a publicity campaign to encourage people to save rather than expect to enter debt, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) claims in a new publication.

In its report "Safeguarding the Future", the ABI outlines policy initiatives to help savers and businesses in the economic slowdown.

Tax certainty is a key issue, as well as encouraging saving through longer term investments and the increase of ISA limits.

UK business should be promoted through proper consultation on tax changes and alterations to taxes on overseas earnings to encourage firms with UK headquarters to bring offshore profits back into the country.

Pensions, savings and debt are also covered in the report.

ABI director general Stephen Haddrill wrote to the chancellor warning that the insurance industry cannot "compete in a globalised world" unless British taxes are reformed, the Financial Times reports.

The ABI wants the Treasury to change the regime to encourage businesses to stay or invest in the UK.
