Sainsbury's pet insurance discussion held

A round table discussion of pet insurance has been held by Sainsbury's Finance in conjunction with Citigate Dewe Rogerson.

It was attended by representatives of Sainsbury's, Calder Vets, Datamonitor and MoneyExpert.

Victoria Jackson of Calder Vets said the minimum cover for pet insurance should be between £6,000 and £7,000.

She suggested courses for veterinary nurses or receptionists which would help them to advise people who ask about cover.

It was also said that while dogs are the most insured, cats are the most prone to mishaps due to their freedom to roam.

Andrew Haslip of Dataomonitor called for a campaign to target people less likely to insure their animals, such as the elderly or those on low incomes.

And Sam Marrs from Sainsbury's cited recent research by the company that found people are looking to abolish their pet insurance due to financial constraints brought on by the credit crunch.

Philip Anderson, executive director of Citigate Dewe Rogerson, pointed out that with veterinary advances such as kidney transplants for cats, cost of medical treatment is likely to increase, making insurance more important.
