AA: Insurance firms need to recognise efforts of young drivers

Though one in five young drivers are involved in accidents within a year of passing their tests, AA Insurance has urged firms not to use this as an excuse to charge them higher rates on their car insurance policies.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance and a panellist at this year's biennial conference hosted by the Association of British Insurers, said that companies should reward those young motorists who demonstrate conscientious attitudes towards driving.

"I believe the industry must work together to find a formula that recognises those who are able to demonstrate they take a responsible approach to driving," he stated.

He highlighted a recent scheme carried out by the AA and local police which was rolled out in North Wales last month. It sees police summon young drivers guilty of minor offenses and offer them a place on a Drive Smart training course so their negative habits are altered early on.

According to research conducted by Tescocompare.com, the majority of young drivers have their own cars by the age of 19, while their parents' generation waited until they were 25.
