Aviva says critical illness insurance policies are vital

Aviva has told customers that critical illness and life insurance policies are important even though everybody hopes they won't need to claim on them.

Michael Whyte, chief underwriter for the organisation, made the comments following news that the insurance provider had paid out nearly £60 million in the first six months of the year to people with critical illnesses.

He claimed that these policies can be important for making sure families finances are not such a worry if a relative becomes ill.

"We are proud that we can make a difference to these families when they need it most, removing financial worries so that they can focus on what is most important," he added.

Aviva reported that it had paid 744 claims in the six months up until the end of June, with the most common illness paid out for being cancer.

The company announced this week that they would begin providing the services of medically-trained professionals to help their Group Risk customers fill in medical underwriting forms.
