Sainsbury's: Remember insurance as thefts increase

The number of insurance claims has dropped despite a rise in burglaries, potentially pointing to fewer people taking out contents cover, according to Sainsbury's Home Insurance.

In the three months to June this year, the Home Office reported that there was a 2.8 per cent increase in the number of burglaries on British homes, compared to the same period the previous year. The number of claims for theft in the same period fell by 13 per cent.

Earlier in the year, Sainsbury's reported that one million people had cancelled their home insurance policies this year despite an increase in burglaries.

The insurance provider also found this month that 1.9 million people went on holiday without any form of travel insurance this summer as they felt they could not afford it.

Ben Tyte, home insurance manager with the company, said the rise in burglaries from homes is unsurprising during a recession, but called the decline in claims "alarming".

"A significant proportion of all home insurance claims relate to theft and we would urge homeowners to make sure their home security is up to scratch and that they have adequate home contents cover," he concluded.
